Groot (Head Sculpture)

Now let me type this article for finshing this work lol. (I'm really weak for typing any that has a deadline in my timeline)

I am adding more portfolio since a month ago to showing people what is my speciality for working in art and craft things. This is important for me so i have a basic things if i want to apply (or maybe hired) by a company that working in the sculpture field.

I am studying how to do a head sculpt, a realistic way, (based on hot toys, etc). Why i choose this? The essential of learning is come from how i could produce somthing that not just good enough, but it is a replica that we could say that it is similar / same. I am using many reference via internet (google) and save some image for my study reference.

This time i am making Groot, a fantasy character belongs to Marvel.

Let me show the progress here (You could always follow my work via instagram):

1. Step 01 : Basic

In this step, i taken a few hours to make a base sculpt for the Groot. I am using fully 100% dry clay. This works is using reference that i found for Groot, then starting to give a similar shape with head of Groot. I make a face and doing a comparison for 1/5 or 1/6th scale.

2. Step 02 : Eyes, Mouth, Detail

In this step, i am extra motivated for doing a great things. This one is working perfectly. I add a detail for the eyes. It is really hard though, really. At last, i could not do an exact shape for the eyes, between right and left eye. Maybe you could notice that later. Next, i'm working for a detail on his head, so i could show the texture of wood that naturely similar with the Groot from Marvel.

3. Step 03 : Base Paint

So, i like when working something until final. I decided to paint this one. First, i am using a brown and yellow ocre as a mix. And, simply i paint all the head.

4. Step 04 : Detail

I am adding the black with glossy effect for the eyes. Then, using a light yellow ocre for the highlight, and a litttle grass green for the leaf-like detail. Maybe i'm just too much for look the reference (Hot Toys), but i think this one worked really well. At this point, i am saying into myself that "Wow, i could do this. Have to work more and more."

5. Finish

You could see this head sculpture in a many angles. I am still looking into this piece after a few days i finished it. It's just "Could i do more something like this?"

You could watch the progress of my painting step below, just in case of you could not see the step that i did lastly.

or maybe you could visit it here too : youtube . There are an explanation there too.

At the end, thank you for reading my work here. I could not say thank enough for this one. Next, i will make another thing for sure. And, you could follow my works here : https://instagram.com/frederickcristofer24/
